"THE VOYAGE OF THE BLACK MADONNA"
A multi-cultural production dedicated to Mother Earth, based
on the Legends of the Black Madonna in Southern Italy.
This feast of music, dance, theatre, elaborate
masks, giant puppets and fresco paintings traces the voyage
of the Roman poet Virgil as lie encounters seven Black Madonnas
who help him understand the essential nature of Mother Earth.
Written by Alessandra Belloni and Dario Bollini, with original
music by John La Barbera, the sumptous production is based
on legends from Southern Italy and it also includes melodies
and rhythms drawn from the celebrations of the Black Madonna
in Africa, Brazil, and the Gypsies in the Basque Regions
of France and Spain. The music is sung in Italian by mezzosoprano
Alessandra Belloni with baritone Ivan Thomas.
A larger scale version of "The Voyage of
the Black Madonna" also features The Thunderbird
American Indian Dancers, Afro-Brazilian music and dances
by "CAFE" and Dina Wright, and Spanish Dancer
Choreographer Sandra Rivera. In this unique production
the Artists, who have come together to celebrate the similarities
in their cultures, convey the messages of unity, spirituality
and respect for Life and Nature.
