The Tarantella harks back to the ancient myth of the spider Arachne, who challenges the Goddess Athena to a weaving contest. Arachne wins and Athena, acting in a fit of jealousy, destroys her competitor's creation. A humiliated Arachne commits suicide, hanging herself from a tree. Athena then transforms her into a spider, thus
condemning her to weave her web forever. The show continues with the Dance of the Tarantula, a ritual dance of liberation, in which women symbolically expel the poison of the mythical bit of the tarantula - also known as "the bite of love". The traditional Tarantella was a dance to celebrate new energy and expel the “old poison” from the body.

RHYTHM IS THE CURE
workshop
We’ll also learn the healing dance of the Pizzica Tarantata with its wild rhythms and fast steps, the sensual Tammuriata and the Calabrian spinning dance.
Held as a sacred ritual, students dance inside a circle of tambourine players and are encouraged to wear white (skirts for women). Alessandra Belloni is the only woman in the UK, Italy and America to use this powerful tambourine style combined with singing and dancing – and her visit to the Abbey her only performance and workshop in the UK this year.
Participants will learn the TAMMORRIATA a sensual dance and rhythm done as a fertility rite in honor of the BLACK MADONNA, done all around Napels in May, outside the churches, originally temples of the Earth Mother Goddess Cybele. Participants will learn a 4/4 rhythm with strong African origins and a beautiful couples' dance using castanets.
The ancient ecstatic dances and rythms in honor of DYONISUS as the trance 6/8 rhythm and dance of SAN ROCCO or the SPINNING DANCE, from Calabria, dating back to the Middle Ages, used as a healing ritual against the plague.
The healing trance dance of purification called PIZZICA TARANTATA is used to cure a mental disorder called Tarantismo, which afflicted mainly wormen who felt stuck in the spider's web of their society. Every student will learn the steps of the Pizzica, which are very fast and energetic. Part of the ritual takes place on the floor, and the dance is actually a spider-like movement on the ground. This part has the most amazing healing effect, releasing stress, the blockage of sexual energy, as well as opening the heart and throat chakras according to the movements, as if coming out of an imaginary SPIDERWEB.
Please wear white and red, the ritual colors of the Tarantate.

workshop
Southern Italian folk dances and rituals are joyous forms of music and dance therapy that have been a source of healing for hundreds of years. In this workshop, we’ll learn ancient Neapolitan chants used to invoke the healing powers and to honor the Black Madonna as a form of prayer to request miracles in our lives. A central part of the workshop will be learning the healing dance of the Pizzica Tarantata. In this workshop students will dance inside a circle of tambourine players, learning the fast steps and wild rhythms of the Pizzica. The ritual takes place on a white sheet, in a spray of red ribbons and involving spider-like dance movements, as if emerging from a spider web. We¢ll also learn the Tammurriata, a sensual dance from Naples, and the Calabrian spinning dance, much like the trance-inducing movements of the Sufis. In this workshop we¢ll experience how movement, dance, drumming and music help us to release anxiety and stress, dissolve sexual blocks and open us up to receive from the heart, by bringing the mind and body into a total state of relaxation.
Note: Participants will be barefoot. Women should wear skirts, and, if possible, everyone should wear white clothes. Tambourines will be provided, but you may bring your own.

Alessandra Belloni has assembled a unique ensemble of women using voice, percussion and ritual dance to honor the healing power of female energy in "Daughters of Cybele,"

TARANTELLA SPIDER DANCE
music and dance show
'TARANTELLA - SPIDER DANCE is a one-of-a-kind presentation that invokes ancient traditions of the Winter and Summer Solstice, when people gathered in the woods to celebrate orgiastic rites in honor of Dionysus. Women danced with swords to the sounds of tambourines and violins in a frenzy driven by the myth of the spider. Originating in Greek rites of the Bacchantes, the tradition continued into the Middle Ages and Renaissance, when women involved were called Tarantate. By stomping their feet and spinning, the women symbolically expelled the poison of the mythical bite of the tarantula.

The Spider Dance, or "Tarantella," is a wild erotic dance ritual from Southern Italy used to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula. An earlier version of this production was presented Tehatre for the new Cuty to sold out audiences last december. This new production has folk dances choreographed by Alessandra Belloni and modern dances choreographed by Antonio Fini, who is originally from southern Italy. Its music infuses ancient melodies and instrumentation; Arabic, Middle Eastern, and Brazilian rhythms; and for the first time, techno beats and electronic music. Arrangements are by violinst Joe Deninzon. Some music has been composed by Alessandra Belloni.

ITALIAN CULTURAL VILLAGE
workshops and concert
Most specifically, the performance harkens back to the historic Dance of the Tarantula, a healing trance dance for women from the Greek rites of the "Baccantes." Women involved in these rites, called Tarantate, danced the "Pizzica Tarantata" ("the bite of the spider tarantula," also called "the bite of love"). A bite of love drives them to dance in a wild frenzy in order to free themselves of repressed sexual desires. Instrumentation in this piece combines the traditional and the modern. Traditional percussion instrumentation will include tambourines, frame drums, dumbeck, riqq and castanets. Modern instrumentation will include drum set; electric violin techno beats and electronic music.
Arachne, played by dancer Sharon Li VArdo, challenges the Goddess Athena, played by percussionist/singer Alessandra Belloni into a weaving contest. Arachne wins and Athena, taken by jealousy, destroys her competitor's creation. A humiliated Arachne commits suicide and hangs herself from a tree. Athena then transforms her into a spider, played by Aerial dancer Fran Sperling thus condemning her to weave her web forever. The performance concludes with a collective trance dance cleansing ceremony. The audience is invited to participate in this celebration of life and love with dancing and wine.
The musical ensemble includes Alessandra Belloni (lead vocals, southern Italian percussion and ritual dance), musical director Joe Deninzon (electric and acoustic violin) percussionist s Vinnie Sciala &Singers are Alessandra Belloni (mezzo soprano), Ivan Thomas (baritone, from the original show "River Dance") and Alessandra Tartivita (soprano).
The dance company includes eight dynamic dancers .and fire dancers of different cultural backgrounds. Appearing will be dancers from the Martha Graham Ensemble, guided by Antonio Fini also in the role of Dyonisus, Italian folk dancers Caterina ragoa nd Francesca Silvano and stilt dancer Mark Mindek.

LOWER EAST SIDE THEATRE FESTIVAL
CONCERT
Southern Italian ritual trance dances and music, featuring Alessandra Belloni, voice, percussion and dance, Joe dDeninzon, violin, WIlson Montuori, guitars, and dancers Antonio Fini and Caterina Rago
Theatre for the New City
155 first Avenue near east 10the Street tel (212) 254-1109
The production has the flavor of Cirque du Soleil and the potential of being the new River Dance. Ms. Belloni and Antonio Fini (of Martha Graham Dance Company) have created a choreography full of surprises using masks, fire, and spiders crawling on the floor.
An earlier version of this production was presented at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in 1996 and played to a sold-out audience as "The Dance of the Ancient Spider." In articles on the year's best World Music CDs, the sound track of this production made the top ten lists of Jon Pareles of the NY Times and Dan Hackman of the Los Angeles Times.
"Tarantella - Spider Dance" is intended to involve the audience of all ages, especially young people, in a collective ritual dance of liberation known as the Pizzica or Spider Dance. The traditional Tarantella was a dance to expel a spider's venom, to celebrate new energy and expel the "old poison" out of the body.
This is Ms. Belloni's first foray into "techno" music. The show features a new take on the tarantella folk rhythm and dance that Ms. Belloni calls "techno Tarantella Ecstasy." The techno sound is mainly created by the Russian violinist Joe Deninzon who is originally from St. Petersburg and leads the jam-band Stratospherus. He has been dubbed the Jim Hendrix of the violin.
Alessandra Belloni is a Remo artist with her own line of signature series tambourines. An internationally-known virtuoso of this instrument, she is reviving its use in an ancient women's tradition. Women priestesses honoring the Goddess of the Earth and the Moon, in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome mainly played the tambourine and its "cousin," the frame drum. Today it is still used in Southern Italy, and Ms. Belloni is the only woman who has mastered this instrument while combining it with singing and dancing.
**The Tammorriata - a sensual dance and rhythm done as fertility rite in honor of the BLACK MADONNA done all around Naples in May outside the churches, originally temples of the Earth Mother Goddess Cybele - participants will learn a 4/4 rhythm with strong African origins and a beautiful couples’ dance using also castanets.
***the ancient ecstatic dances and rhythms in honor of Dyonisus as the trance 6/8 rhythm and dance of SAN ROCCO or THE SPINNING DANCE, ***the healing trance dance of purification called PIZZICA TARANTATA used to cure a mental disorder called Tarantismo, which afflicted mainly women, who felt stuck in the spider web of their society.

TARANTELLA SPIDER DANCE
workshop
In this workshop featuring Southern Italian folk dances and rituals, learn chants used to invoke the healing power of the sun and moon, as well as a repertoire of therapeutic dances, accompanied by the beat of frame drums and tambourines. Alessandra presents these unique dance movements which trace their roots from Southern Italy back to ancient Greece, with connections to Iran, Egypt and Andalusia, as well as to the traditions of the Gypsies who traveled from Rajasthan through North Africa, Morocco and Spain to Sicily and Calabria. Carrying an unbroken chain of inspiration from pre-Christian times to the present, these dance movements embody the diverse traditions of dance we know today as Flamenco, Belly Dance and Tribal Dance. Prepare to be enraptured by these exciting and healing dances! Videos collected during Alessandra’s research are shown at the beginning of the workshop demonstrating actual rituals from outside the churches of Southern Italy.

Southern Italian folk dances and rituals are joyous and healing forms of music and
dance therapy. In this workshop, we’ll learn ancient Neapolitan chants used to invoke
the healing power of the sun and to honor the Black Madonna. In this way we request
miracles and healing in our lives. A central part of the workshop will be learning the
dance Pizzica Tarantata, which originated as a ritual to cure the mythical bite of the
tarantula. In the Pizzica students will dance inside a circle of tambourine players.
Each student will take a turn inside the circle, learning the fast steps and wild rhythms
of the Pizzica. Part of the ritual takes place on the floor—on a white sheet, surrounded
by red ribbons—and the dance involves spider-like movements, as if emerging
from a spider web. We’ll also learn the Tammurriata, a sensual dance from Naples, and
a Calabrian spinning dance similar to trance-inducing movements of Sufi dances.
We’ll experience how dance, drumming and music allow us to release anxiety, relax sexual
blocks, open the heart and liberate our expression. This brings the mind and body into a
state of total relaxation.
Note: Participants will be barefoot. Women should wear skirts, and, if possible, everyone
should wear white clothes. Please do not wear black. Tambourines will be provided,
but you may bring your own.

Dedicated to the healing power of the Tarantella trance dance

We will begin with drumming and ancient Neapolitan chants used for healing and to honor the Black Madonna, and then learn several ancient ritual dances: the Tammurriata, a beautiful, sensual dance from Naples; the Pizzica Tarantata, a wild dance performed to exorcise a mental disease called tarantismo; and a Calabrian spinning dance, similar to certain Sufi trance-inducing arts. We will also learn the basic techniques of the tambourine, its accents and accompanying chants and discover other healing rituals. Learn how to release stress, unblock sexual energy, open your heart and throat chakras and achieve deep relaxation. Note: Participants will be barefoot. Women should preferably wear skirts, and if possible everyone should wear white clothes. The instructor will provide tambourines, but you are welcome to bring your own. ~ ALESSANDRA BELLONI ~ RHYTHM IS THE CURE in Glastonbury An amazing opportunity to experience powerful healing dances including the Tarantella, with world famous percussionist, singer-dancer and REMO Drums Signature series artist
Friday 11th May-Sunday 13th May 2007 Three day Healing Dance & Percussion workshop
Alessandra Belloni is artist in residence at New York’s Cathedral of St John the Divine and is director of the music, theatre and dance company i Guillari di Piazza. She presents concerts and workshops internationally in the USA, Brazil and Europe. Alessandra’s REMO Signature series tambourines may be purchased at the workshop as well as her new book!
Featuring Southern Italian ritual dances for music and dance therapy. Alessandra Belloni will teach unique drum and tambourine techniques and lead us in a series of dances to the Black Madonna and the Mother Earth Goddess. We begin with a processional chant in honour of the Black Madonna - Canto della Madonna di Montevergine and the ancient Neapolitan chant - Jesce Sole, an invocation to the Sun. Alessandra will then lead us in several powerful healing dances - Tammorriata - a beautiful, sensual dance from Naples, performed in pairs; Tarantella alla Montemaranese, a wild carnival processional dance from Naples, performed in a circle, wearing masks; and Ritmo E Danza Di San Rocco – the Spinning Dance in which people go into trance or ecstasy. On Saturday there will be an Evening Procession to Chalice Well with chants, drumming and dance in honour of the Black Madonna, preparing for the final ritual of purification in the trance dance of the Pizzica Tarantata, a very fast 6/8 rhythm from Puglia, which originated as a cure for the mythical bite of the tarantula spider. This powerful healing dance opens the heart and throat and releases stress and blocked energies.

TARANTELLA SPIDER DANCE
CONCERT
The Tarantella harks back to the ancient myth of the spider Arachne, who challenges the Goddess Athena to a weaving contest. Arachne wins and Athena, acting in a fit of jealousy, destroys her competitor's creation. A humiliated Arachne commits suicide, hanging herself from a tree. Athena then transforms her into a spider, thus condemning her to weave her web forever. The show continues with the Dance of the Tarantula, a ritual dance of liberation, in which women symbolically expel the poison of the mythical bit of the tarantula - also known as "the bite of love". The traditional Tarantella was a dance to celebrate new energy and expel the “old poison” from the body.
