Sicilian Film Presentation & Folk Music Night, with buffet dinner Tuesday, May 14 from 6:30 to 9 pm in The Galleria Wine and beer available for purchase. Cost: $60 members, $75 non-members

Back by popular demand, this entertaining musical event begins with the screening of a short new film, “Black Madonna Pilgrimage and Summer Solstice Music Celebration in Sicily,” followed by live Sicilian Folk Music and dancing.

The ensemble is led by Alessandra Belloni, an award-winning percussionist, singer, dancer, actress and teacher. She is renowned worldwide for her group and solo performances and concerts in theaters, universities, and international percussion festivals. She is author of “Healing Journeys with the Black Madonna,” which will be available for sale at the event.

Also performing at Casa’s event are John La Barbera, guitar and mandolin; Steve Gorn, flutes, saxophone and clarinet; and dancers Peter de Geronimo and Danielle Fusco.

This fund raiser will also help Alessandra raising funds for her upcoming knee surgery December 21, and her recovery time. This will be such a special celebration of over four decades of work for I Giullari di Piazza, a non profit organization, who are artists in residence at the Cathedral of St. John Divine and who have also performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Symphony Space, to name but a few. The joyous afternoon will include a performance of "Tarantata," by award winning percussionist, singer, author Alessandra Belloni with composer, guitarist John La Barbera, founders of I Giullari di Piazza, in their famed production of "Tarantata," an impeccably researched production rich with songs, tarantellas, and magic rituals used to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula, along with healing chants and ritual drumming in honor of the Black Madonna. With its authentic music, costumes, and instrumentation, Belloni and company here unite the fascinating and similar legends, traditions, and musical rhythms of Southern Italy and Brasil. And, as always, the fun concludes with audience members being invited to join the cast for a "raise the roof" tarantella.
